Senior Citizen Nutrition Program

The Senior Citizen Nutrition Program serves hot, well-balanced meals five days a week in a congregate environment. Meals are served on a first come, first served basis. The meals are designed to include one-third of the recommended dietary allowance (RDA). Menus typically include an entree, two vegetables, bread, desert, milk, and juice. The meals are prepared offsite .For seniors on restricted diets; the meals are low fat, low sodium, and low in sugar. Complex carbohydrates are stressed. Meals are also delivered to "Shut-ins" senior who are too ill or incapacitated to come to EOFULA.

This is not a free meal program. It is a low cost lunch program. Seniors are asked to contribute $1.00 - $1.25 per congregate or homebound meal. However, no one will be denied service because they cannot contribute. The contribution is voluntary . Non-seniors are required to pay a guest fee. The Washington D.C. Office on Aging provides hot, home-delivered meals to low income "shut-in" seniors including those who cannot afford to contribute the "suggested" contribution. The seniors served are those living alone, too old, frail, or sick to prepare adequate meals
